Winter can be a dark and depressing time of the year. And for some reason, February, even with just 28 short days, feels like the longest of them all. Maybe it’s because Christmas break is long gone, yet the good weather seems so far away. Maybe it’s the anxiety of ANOTHER Valentine’s Day. But, cheer up! From winter weather, to travel tips, to snowy sports, here are 7 of the ZM team’s favorite apps to fight the winter blues and survive the season:

1) Randi – Best for “Not Being Late For Work Due To Snow” = Winter Wake-Up:

Price: Free

Unless you’ve lived in sunny weather your whole life (lucky you), you know what it’s like to wake up, get ready, and step out the door for work…only to find that it snowed last night and you now need 30 minutes to shovel your driveway and scrape ice off your windshield. Suddenly, your whole day is running late. The Winter Wake-Up app works like a standard alarm clock, except it wakes you up early if there’s been snow or freezing weather overnight, giving you extra time to shovel your path, defrost your car, and still get out the door on time! My favorite is the “Don’t bother to wake me up if the weather’s too bad. I’ll work on Saturday” setting.

2) Erin – Best for “Spiking That Warm Cup Of Cocoa” = Mixology:

Price: Free

I use this app, especially in the winter, to find great hot cocktail recipes. This app has over 150 yummy concoctions in the Hot Drinks tab. After a cool day on the slopes or when you are ready to warm up for a movie on the couch, this app is a perfect way to heat up during the winter!

3) Brad – Best for “Taking a Winter Road Trip” = Road Trip Weather:

Price: $1.99

Going on a road trip, despite the less-than-ideal weather? This app allows you to plot multiple points along the way and will give you the weather for each of the places you’re going to be driving through. At $1.99, the app does a few things that regular weather apps don’t do, like picking the best driving route for you, based on the weather, and lets you know if you should delay your departure times along the way, as it’s always better to be safe, than sorry!

4) Ashmi – Best for “Fighting Those Winter Sniffles” = WebMD:

Price: Free

Achy limbs, swollen glands, slight fever, dizziness, and nausea – you’re worried that these symptoms indicate something more serious than the common cold that’s been going around at your office. WebMD can help – just enter what’s ailing you in its popular symptoms checker, and it will give you a list of all the possible things you could have. Disclaimer: though you’ll love this super extensive app, be sure to double-check your symptoms with a doctor if it’s serious!

5) Nate – Best for “Ski Bums and Wannabe Ski Bums” = Ski and Snow Report:

Price: Free

This super popular app is a great companion for any skier or snowboarder, as it gives you the current conditions at your favorite ski mountain, as well as details for which ski lifts and trails are open/closed,  average snowfall,  a web cam so you can see what the lines look like, and trail maps. You can even sign-up to get updates when your favorite mountains get fresh snow! Your time on the mountain is precious – this app helps you make the most of it!

6) Jeff – Best for “Predicting if School Will Be Cancelled” = sNOw School:

Price: $0.99

Want to know whether the falling snow outside will result in the student in your life being stuck at home (and staying in bed, having a snowball fight, or possibly driving you crazy)? This app uses live weather forecasts and historical school-specific data to predict, as accurately as possible, if there will be a snow day at a school. This app works for thousands of public schools, private schools, and colleges in the northeast, and they are expanding to more every week!

7) Holly – Best for “Avoiding Bad Weather Hassles On-The-Go” = Dark Sky

Price: $3.99

We’ve all had those awful “I got stuck in bad weather days”: rain, sleet and snow can all result in bad hair days, wet shoes and a constant chill. With the Dark Sky app you can get a glance at exactly when it will rain or snow up to an hour in advance. So you’re free to walk the dog, take that run or play another round of hoops.
