Celebrity stylist Hasti Kashfia rounds up the best of New York Fashion Week and shares how all of us can rock the hottest styles on the streets. Check out her favorite collections and pieces below.
Prints and patterns: One of the biggest trends we saw walk NYFW was the use of print. Every collection included beautiful textiles and prints, with no boundaries. We saw prints on blazers, pants, dresses, skirts, shirts – well, basically on everything. There are two ways to wear prints. The “fashion forward” way would be to layer and mix prints. Yes, I mean wear stripes with polka dots or a bold graphic blazer over a smaller printed dress. The more practical way to wear this trend would be to wear each piece on its own. Grab a pair of fabulous printed pants, and pair it with a solid top. Or, layer a bold colored dress with a graphic blazer. Don’t shy away from prints come fall. Embrace them in moderation, and you’ll be fine.
One of my favorite collections previewing beautiful prints and patterns was from J Crew.
Leather accents: Key word: accents. Fight the urge to go “Cat Woman” with this trend by investing in one quality piece. I would suggest a great leather jacket that you can wear over and over again. If your life revolves more around cocktail dresses than it does career wear, skip the jacket and purchase a leather dress or skirt. You can layer both pieces with T’s, sweaters, and cardigans for various looks come fall. Be wary of “pleather” (fake leather). There is quality “pleather” – and there is the stuff that “smells like pleather.” Avoid anything that smells fake, because it will more than likely look fake too.
Favorite Piece: A Beautiful Prabal Gurung Skirt
Metallics: Another big trend for fall (especially when it comes to gowns) is the use of metallics and shine. There are a few tips and tricks to wearing fabrics with shine. They tend to highlight any “flaws” and accentuate the parts we want to minimize. That being said, take this trend and try to incorporate it into your cocktail looks. Most of us don’t have too many occasions to rock a gown, so take “style inspiration” from the runways of New York Fashion Week into your closet by purchasing pieces you would actually wear.
Modest Necklines: I’ve never seen so many closed necklines at Fashion Week. Maybe it was Nemo? So many collections leaned towards closed necklines this year. This will be one of the easiest styles to incorporate into your closet this fall. It’s also a great change for anyone in the professional world. Often, professional women feel like they need to sacrifice fashion for a closed neck line, but that won’t be the case this year. If you completely close up the neck, try a less “conservative” bottom, or wear a figure-flattering outfit that tapers and cuts in at your smallest point. While modest is nice – baggy, long, AND a closed neck will be matronly, sloppy, and just as messy as a plunging v-neck in the office.
NUDE – but not that kind of nude: Nude nails, nude lips, and even nude eyes dominated much of the shows this year at NYFW. This will be one of the most budget-friendly ways to bring in fall trends into your life with a trip to the drug store. Once again, a little goes a long way. A lot of the models looked dead, which is totally okay for a Fashion Show, but not okay for a date or picking up your kid at school. The great thing with a nude nail is that it’s easy to manage, and you can lower your maintenance by opting for gel or Shellac. As far as the nude makeup up goes, pick one area. If you’re skipping the eyeliner, add some color to your lips and cheeks. If you go for a nude lip, PLEASE wear mascara. Trust me on this one. I didn’t see many strong liner looks, which means less time for those of us who are rushed in the morning dropping off kids and running to work – a plus! Remember when it comes to makeup this fall, less is more and more is probably too much.
