There was a time when I considered it a dream job. I was chosen to launch and host a TV talk show in San Francisco. But not just any ordinary talk show – it would be a daily, live interactive program where viewers could participate through Twitter and Facebook. I know, I know, it’s not so cutting edge today, but back in 2010, no one was doing it. For the local TV scene, it had tremendous promise.
Well, it was a great ride for nearly two years. And then…it happened. The show was cancelled. To say that I was crushed was an understatement. Not only was I publicly visible as one of the faces of the show, but I’d candidly shared the crazy, fun details of my life with viewers online. In an instant it was gone, and I felt vulnerable in front of both the camera and the computer.
After I broke the news to my Twitter followers and Facebook friends, I so badly wanted to delete myself from social media and just crawl into a hole to have my pity party in private. But I didn’t. I put on a brave face and shared my very real life experience. Believe me, there were days when I didn’t want to log on to social media but the comments of kindness and support were pretty amazing. Now that I look back, it sounds simple, but trust me, at the time, it felt #DotComplicated.
