I’m sure we’ve all seen it on Facebook. The photo of the grinning husband and wife bent over the toilet in the background with the caption, “We’re pregnant!” Or the clever play on words: “We’re Prego!” with a Prego spaghetti jar. From proud over-sharers, the close-up of a positive pee stick. Or, the fuzzy photo of a first ultrasound. And the second. And the third.

Traditionally, it was common for happy couples to wait at least three months to announce the news to friends because of the risk of miscarriage. And at first, they would keep the news to just a few close friends and extended family. But recently, we’re seeing more and more parents jump the gun, publicly posting the news on Facebook to their friends – acquaintances and colleagues included. Some couples even post a video of the exact moment they found out they are pregnant on YouTube. ABC News is calling them ‘Womb-Tubers‘.

Is the Facebook pregnancy announcement becoming that natural next step for expecting couples, just like making a relationship or engagement Facebook-official? You’re not really pregnant until you’re Facebook-pregnant… right? It’s heartwarming to see the well-wishes and congratulatory “likes” from friends pouring in online. But on the other hand, it greatly sharpens the pain for parents who are suffering the deeply tragic loss of miscarriage.

There is no “right” way to announce a pregnancy. At the end of the day, I think it is up to the expecting parents to decide when – and how – they want to share the news. If you’re so inclined to come up with a funny, witty way to announce the news, then more power to you.
