If This Then That (IFTTT) is a fabulous free service for automating all aspects of your life. IFTTT, as I’ll refer to it for the remainder of this article, lets you set up chain reactions between different accounts or programs you use. For example, you could:

  • Upload to Dropbox every time you’re tagged in a Facebook photo

  • Receive a text message 15 minutes before a calendar event

  • Automatically share on Twitter every time you post to WordPress

  • Add iOS reminders to Google Calendar

  • Send any item added to Pocket to Evernote

There are hundreds (thousands?) of possible combinations. You can browse through and see how other people are using the service, or create your own recipes and triggers. As their slogan says, IFTTT allows you to “Put the internet to work for you.”

One of my favorite uses of IFTTT has been to alert me with a text message when I receive an important email. I’ve found that this stops me from mindlessly scanning my email in the evenings to see if anything urgent came in. The potential uses for the service are endless and every time I browse through recipes that other people have created, I activate a new one or two.

IFTTT (pronounced like gift without the ‘g’) is an awesome time saver and super helpful free service with applications for anyone. Sit back and enjoy while IFTTT does your busywork.
