Our mission with Dot Complicated is to help people untangle their lives. In our online lives today, we have limitless access to information, megaphones to broadcast our thoughts to the world, and the ability to reach and be reached 24 hours a day. This abundance of communication has introduced all sorts of new complications. The same is true for our offline lives. There are so many studies that show that when we get rid of clutter, be it physical clutter or emotional clutter, we feel happier, lighter, and more focused.
This summer, we’ve decided to focus our Wednesday newsletters on untangling and uncluttering both our online and offline lives, in the hopes that we can be our happiest, lightest, best selves going into the fall. Each week, we’ll have a new, fun challenge to reduce the clutter in our lives. To stay updated on our tips and receive fun challenges in your inbox, be sure to subscribe to Dot Complicated here.
So please join us. Let’s work together to all feel a little lighter by the end of the summer.
Mini Mission: Declutter Your Digital Photos
This summer, the cameras (and camera-phones) are out to play. Digital photo clutter makes it impossible to know what photos you have and eats up your memory. Our challenge this week? Every time you take a stream of photos, go back and delete the extras so only the best take is in your camera roll. While you’re at it, scroll back and delete all those past screenshots, double takes and accidental photos. Only hang on to photos that spark a special memory. Then, use this software to organize them so it’s easy to find the perfect photo for your holiday card or to print and frame.
- Flayvr: This app automatically organizes the photos and videos on your camera roll into albums, sorted by event. The albums display in a timeline on your screen for easy access. Albums can be shared or kept private (free, iOS).
- Everpix: This photo platform takes photos from your phone, computer or tablet and stores them securely in the cloud. Everpix organizes pictures based on the normal stuff like time and place, but also based on colors, shapes and themes. You can even set up occasional email alerts of old pictures to remind you of fun times past ($49/year, iOS, Windows).
- Flickr: Flickr gives you amble space to upload your photos and store them online. You can create albums and upload shots from any of your devices. Photos can be private or public, and are held securely on the website (free, iOS, Google play).
