Summer weather means outdoor fun, lazy barbecues and beach time. But, unfortunately, summer temperatures also can usher in some pretty threatening weather. It’s important to be sure that your family has a safety plan in case of emergency. Here, we profile some apps that can help with coordination and safety in the face of disaster.
The Red Cross offers a suite of apps that can help during a crisis. Natural disaster apps help you monitor and prepare for hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes. A first aid app provides instructions for any scenario, and the shelter-finder option directs you to safe spaces (free, iOS, Android).
2. MyMedList
MyMedList lets you manage and store all your medications. It’s great both for your own convenience and organization, as well as for letting physicians know what medications you (or your parents) are taking in an emergency situation (free, iOS).
This app will help you stay up-to-date on the latest CPR protocol and procedures. Adult, child and infant CPR are all included, and the app is produced by the American Heart Association so you know it’s trustworthy. Check out how the app saved a life in Haiti here ($1.99, iOS, Android).
4. Life360
This family locator app lets you keep everyone you love updated on your location instantly. It’s easy to update each other when running late or changing locations, and is great for peace of mind when wondering where someone is (free, iOS, Android, Blackberry).
And some general tips for emergency preparedness:
- If phone lines are down, try texting to get in touch with family members. Texts can often go through when calls can’t.
- Designate an out-of-state person that everyone can call in case of an emergency who can help coordinate from afar. Write their contact information on a notecard you keep in your wallet.
- Designate a meeting place outside your home or in your neighborhood where everyone can meet if something happens to the house.
- Set a family code word or password that everyone knows in order to verify identity if necessary.
Stay safe this summer!
