maxresdefaultOne of the oldest industrial exhibitions in Germany is currently taking place in Berlin. The IFA global trade expo is the European version of the Consumer Electronics Show held annually in Las Vegas. IFA is over 90 years old, beginning in 1924, and is held in a venue the size of 21 soccer fields featuring the latest tech innovations of over 1,600 exhibitors to more than 200,000 attendees. In 2014, IFA generated orders over 4 BILLION Euros in the 6 days during the exhibition alone.

This year’s IFA started September 4th and ends September 9th so today Randi sat down with Jeremy Kaplan, the editor-in-chief at Digital Trends, and digital marketing strategist, Clint Schaff of Camp Playa, to discuss digital trends and digital marketing. Here’s quotes:

JEREMY KAPLAN

“I like tech that addresses specific problems. It should do something for us.”

“IFA got its origin outside of the electronics space.”

“One of the biggest things we see is TVs.”

“The OLED Panasonic television won our Best in Show. It is astonishing beautiful to look at.”

“There’s been a lot of change in the display world, so you have you those curved tvs. The tech behind it is impressive.”

“4K UHD TVs are a big revolution we’re going to see. Especially this holiday this system.”

“I just want a remote from Apple, not a TV.”

“We were wowed by the new Gear S2 by Samsung. They spent a lot of time refining something that works well. “

“One of things Apple is going to announce are gadgets for the smarthome.”

“The big thing at IFA are the appliances. We saw a fridge with a built in ice cream maker.”

“I have a new microwave and range and the time is always off. Samsung has a software that allows appliances to sync up.”

“The Sony Xperia 4K smartphone is impressive.”

“The drone space was fantastic.  I like the drones that can follow you when zipping downhill on your skis.”

“Previously LG was the only TV maker putting out OLED screens which are set to replace LCD.

“All of the major tech companies are pushing into virtual reality.”

“VR is such a funny market, it’s hard to get a feel on it.”

“Virtual reality is a wonderful technology but it’s very isolating.”

“The thing that blew my mind the most was a demo of the HoloLens from Microsoft. It took a 3D mapping of Mars so I was walking on the surface of Mars.”

“I don’t think timely and trendy is the most important. Get something well put-together and get good reviews.”

“A lot of tech companies think they have to be first out there—look at smartwatches. A lot of them are bad.”

“The app I use the most is Google Skymap. Based on GPS, it will show you the stars.”

“I deleted Snapchat recently. It pours an incredible amount of data in my phone.”

CLINT SCHAFF

“I was one of the Google Glass adopters. Not only did that not have a function but I didn’t look cool.”

“In our network of “camps”, one thing that’s different is population size. In Canada you reach everyone pretty easily. Not like the US.”

“Digital and social forms of advertising are definitely the most important in marketing.”

“The TV space doesn’t have an awareness of how those things work. And, conversely, VR has built a demand for something that doesn’t even exist yet.”

“As a marketer, I like the app experience of companies like Starbucks which is not a tech company but integrates tech so successfully.”

“We’re all trying to figure out how to do mobile messaging best. For brands that understand that any opportunity to engage is a successful opportunity is doing it right.”

“Most of the messaging apps don’t allow you to search for the company.”

“The New York Tough campaign was successful in localizing the product benefit message.”

“If you’re a small business you need to localize your campaign.”

“Younger people are open to marketing messages as long as they provide value.”

“Quality is paramount.”

“I can’t stop using the photo stream on my iPhone. It allows me to be more private in my sharing.”
