Graph Search can help you find a job by helping you discover who you know that may be useful to your hunt. Remember, Graph Search is a new feature and might not be available to all Facebook users yet.

  • [My Friends] or [my friends of friends] who work at [x company]

Once you find a connection, reach out and ask to learn more about what they do. You’d be surprised how much you can learn from a simple chat over coffee.

Be informed: Follow or like the companies you’re interviewing with. Stay up-to-date on their latest corporate news, ad campaigns, and products to discuss in your cover letter and during the interview. Stay in-the know about industry trends by following news organizations like The New York Times and CNN.

Put your best foot forward: Make sure your timeline is boss-ready by reviewing your Activity Log and managing what content appears on your timeline. You can easily change who sees your past posts and photos and review what appears on your timeline in the future.

Using the ‘View As’ tool you can see what your timeline looks like to other people. Just go to your timeline and click the gear button on the far right below your cover photo, click “View As” and see what your profile looks like to the public. To preview how your profile appears to a specific person, like a friend or coworker, type their name into the open field and press enter.

It is also important to make sure that your profile is up to date so that recruiters using tools like Graph Search can find you. Consider entering your major or past employers so you show up in searches such as: “People who worked at [Company] and who majored in [subject]”

hire meUpdate friends and family on your progress: Facebook is great for those times when you have news you want to share with all your friends, like when you’ve accepted a new job.  But for those times when you only want to reach a friend or two to share your interview progress or ask questions about a particular company, Facebook also makes it easy to send private messages.  Here are some quick tips for getting the most out of Facebook mobile messaging this summer:

  • Start messages instantly – From the Facebook app, tap the icon in the top right of your News Feed to get to the messaging sidebar.  Just tap the name of a friend and your message will reach them wherever they log in to Facebook – on their smartphone, feature phone or the web.  Want to know who will get notified about your message on their phone? Look for the mobile icon.
  • Message groups of friends – You can create a small group to share messages with, such as anxious family waiting to hear how an interview went. Tap the message bubble icon at the top of the screen. Tap the Group button, then tap the names of the friends you want to message. Once you start a group conversation, you can give it a name like “Parents” so it’s easy to find it again later.

The standalone Facebook Messenger app lets you get right to all your conversations from your Android or iPhone home screen.

Relocating for a new job: Congrats on landing the new job! To explore your new city, use Graph Search to discover your friends’ favorite restaurants and activities. You can also search for friends of friends who just moved to town, or new friends who share common interests (Drama club or hiking, anyone?)
