We Asked You!

Posted On February 10, 2013

We asked you last week if you share passwords with your significant other. For those who do, which ones are you comfortable sharing? Your email? Phone passcode? Debit PIN? Facebook? If any are totally off-limits, why? Below are our favorite responses from our readers.

We are married, so we share all of our banking information. We also share our computer and phone logins so we can use each other’s devices. We have never had a reason to share email or social media passwords, but we would if it were somehow beneficial to running our household. We mostly use those accounts to socialize or do business, which does not rely on our partner. We aren’t the kind of people who feel the need to check in on what our partner’s up to online. -Hazel

I share none of the above. I’ve been specifically asked NOT to do so. Also, my stuff is my stuff! -Alison @AC_at_work

No need to share them- we trust each other completely. I don’t need to follow his every move, and I respect his privacy. -Jennifer @JenniferPlopan

In the past, I’ve shared my iPhone passcode and my Apple ID (iTunes/App Store account for buying apps). -Arielle

My girlfriend knows all of my passwords…even my ATM pin. -Majid @zombitech

Absolutely. If you have something you need to hide you either don’t trust them or shouldn’t be doing it. -Melly @MellySaffelly

#FullDiclosure with my awesome wife 🙂 -Tim @timsavage

The biggest reason I don’t like to share passwords is because I don’t want to spoil any surprises. Gifts shipped, parties planned, etc. -Jeff ‏@JPeters1221

My wife knows all my login credentials – and I have a log of them in case I were to pass away.Jordan @JordanDunn

I share checkbook but not email passwords. It’s like someone going through your purse. It’s mine, it’s personal. Hands off. -Susan @susancochran

We have similar passwords for accounts we made in the time we’ve dated. But we know each other’s passwords. -Nicole @coffeeisgreen

Our Tips For Managing And Securing Your Passwords

  • Hate forgetting your passwords? It feels like we create an account practically every day now for a new software, online service, or app – and at this rate, it’s just going to get more complicated to organize it all. For those who are overwhelmed by all the passwords to keep track of, 1Password is our favorite 1-stop solution. It safely secures all of your logins and passwords in one place behind one strong master password, and it can even store your credit card and bank account information. Learn more about its awesome features here.
  • How long would it take to hack into your account? How Secure Is My Password? is a cool tool where you can type in your password and see how many hours (or seconds – yikes!) it would take for a hacker to crack your password. We tried it and were a little scared – which is a great incentive to buckle down!
  • Make sure you create a secure password. Last week, a security breach on Twitter caused about 250,000 accounts to be hacked – a reminder of how important it is to re-evaluate your passwords and make sure they are secure. The trick is to create longer passwords and avoid including words from the dictionary (even though they’re easier to remember). Watch this video from Mashable for more tips.
